 मध्यवर्ती बँक (Central Bank) भारतातील मध्यवर्ती बँकेचा इतिहास :-  इंग्रज सरकारनी व्यापाराला चालना देण्यासाठी भारतात अनेक व्यापारी बँका स्थापन केल्या. तसेच स्वदेशी चळवळ व स्वातंत्र्य लढ्यामुळे अनेक ऐतदेशीय व्यक्तीने व्यापारी बँका स्थापन केल्या. अनेक व्यापारी बँकेच्या स्थापनेमुळे त्यांच्या प्रगतीबरोबरच पैसा आणि पतपैसा याचा देशातील वापर वाढला. त्यामुळे भारतात अशा बँकावर व तिच्या व्यवहारावर नियंत्रण ठेवून पैशाची जबाबदारी स्विकारणाऱ्या बँकेची आवश्यकता वाटू लागली. इ.स. १८७३ मध्ये श्री वॉरन हेस्टिंग्ज' यांनी लिहिलेल्या पत्रात भारतात मध्यवर्ती बँक स्थापन करावे असे नमुद केले होते. त्यानुसार भारतात मध्यवर्ती बँक स्थापन करण्याचा पहिला प्रयत्न झाला. त्यानंतर अनेक अर्थत गांनी, विचारवंतानी व राज्यकर्त्यांनी मध्यवर्ती बँक स्थापन करण्याच्या शिफारशी केल्या. सन १९१३ मध्ये 'चेंबरलीन आयोगा' चे सदस्य लॉर्ड केन्स यांनी भारतासाठी मध्यवर्ती बँक निर्मितीची आवश्यकता स्पष्ट केली होती. १९२१ मध्ये पुन्हा एकदा मध्यवर्ती बँक स्थापण्याच्या हालचालींना वेग आला. यावर्षी तीन प्रेसिडेन्सी बँकेच्या एकत्रीकरणात
