The Pulley George Herbert Essay - Type Question
Essay - Type Question
Q - Explain the meaning of the last stanza. What is God's plan? Do you think it is successful?
Ans- The poem The pulley', is a fine piece of composition written by George Herbert. He is a religious poet. This poem is about a man's soul, which is compared to a pulley. In this poem, the poet compares God to the pulley and 'God' is working like the pulley who pulls out each sacred gift from a glass brimming over until he comes to the last one. At the outset of the poem, the poet expresses that when God first made mankind he wants to pour all of his blessings into a man.
He thought that with these certain unique qualities his life would be happy. God decides to give him all of his riches because God feels that this man is worthy of these riches. Then he poured his blessings into a man. First, he gives strength, then beauty, wisdom, honor, pleasure gives him. God pulls out each sacred gift from the glass until he comes to the last one and this is the 'Rest. God is about to bestow the last blessing to a map but he stopped and think if he gives rest to man, then man would forget the creator and man will come to worship all things in nature, instead of worshipping God. Here, the poet expresses God's purpose in creating mankind.
God wanted that man would find the true rest only in him. It has happened only when God keeps the rest with him. Because God had full knowledge that his blessings would tire a man one day and make him exhausted. So God decided and said, Let him be rich and weary, that at least! If goodness leads him not, yet weariness! May toss him to my breast.' It means God expects that if a man's goodness would not lead him to God, at least his weariness would lead him towards God. God thinks that if a man will at least be tired, he will have reason to worship him. In this way,
I think that God's purpose is successful, that He kept the 'rest' with him. So, that the man would worship God. My love of God does not return man to him, his weariness, tiredness would lead him to God.
