3. Study of Imbibition using dried seeds/raisins. 

 Aim:

 To study the imbibition using seeds or raisins.  

Requirements: 

Water, beaker, dry seeds or raisins, etc.  

Principle: 

Imbibition is the adsorption of water or any other solvent without forming a solution.  The different hydrophilic substances present in plant cells or cell walls, imbibe water.  Figure by using raisins 

Procedure: Take some dry seeds or raisins in a beaker or Petri dish or bowl.  Add an ample amount of water to it.  Keep the set up for a few hours and observe the change in Observation: The seeds or raisins kept or soaked in water show change in their volume showing the swollen structure and seed coat/raisins shows softening.  

Conclusion:

 When seeds are immersed in water, they swell due to imbibition.  This swelling up causes a temporary increase in the volume of the cell.  transported and does not require energy as materials are passively Raisins increase in size due to imbibition of water.  As seeds imbibe water, they expand and enzymes and food supplies become hydrated.  Hydrated enzymes become active and the seed increases its metabolic activities to produce.  energy for the growth process.
